Webinar: The Importance of Community Engagement in Restoration Projects

Restoring Habitat and Improving Community Connectivity and Resiliency through Innovative Public/Private Partnerships and Outreach: Our Habitat Restoration Model

This presentation, conducted by Capt. Alek Modjeski of the American Littoral Society, provides a dynamic overview of littoral estuarine habitat restoration emphasizing the importance of community engagement and involvement in the restoration process. The presentation will discuss his proven recipe for successful habitat restoration, the importance of public/private partnerships, and includes a number of case studies of projects conducted throughout the New Jersey coastal area focusing on the application of living shoreline restoration practices. Project goals extend beyond just repairing impacted subtidal, intertidal, and coastal/riparian habitats, to include integration of elements that increase the ecosystem's resilience to future impairments while expanding ecosystem services and functions. A unique feature of the case studies presented in this lecture is the extensive involvement of a workforce consisting of military veterans and volunteers.
